The tongue on the trailer needs to be replaced. It is
attached to the trailer by no more than 5 or 6 inches. Notice the upward
angle which only gets worse with weight on the trailer |
Not much holding the tongue on
|
The main frame is an old truck frame.

Cutting away the tongue and a few feet of the frame

As luck would have it. the old truck frame just happens to be
6" - A piece of 6 inch C channel will match up perfect. Cut made with the
torch. |
Tongue all cut away |
Fitting the new frame piece. This will extend the front of
the trailer by 3 feet. |
The trick is to ensure it is straight and true with the rest
of the old frame. |
Both sides of the new front frame clamped into place. This is
when you realize you need more clamps!! |

| The
front piece of the frame channel is cut to size and welded on |

Matches up very nice. BTW, for all the backyard engineers, NO this will not
give me too much tongue weight. Part of the problem with the old setup was
there was NO tongue weight at all. |
A
little hard to see but what I am doing here is cutting a large hole in the
bottom of the C channel. I will repeat this about every foot. |
Another showing the holes cut in the frame |

Working on the new tongue |
Measuring carefully and cutting the notches where the tongue will be bent. |
Heated and bending the tongue. At this time the tongue is clamped in place. |
Fitting the tongue. btw, that long frame jack from Harbor Freight turned out
to be a piece of crap. |
Now
for the other side |

Just got a new band saw from Harbor Freight. I am very impressed at how nice
it cuts for a $150.00 saw. |
Starting to take shape |

Adding the 5" side channel |

Looking a lot better now. The primer I use is "Rust Destroyer". Very good
stuff but very hard to find. |
